Quick Answer
👉 Key concepts:
- Position Error = √(X² + Y²)
- Bonus Tolerance = Actual Size − MMC (for internal features)
- Total Allowed = Listed Tolerance + Bonus
✔ Example:
Listed Tol = 0.014 mm
Measured Size = 2.004 mm
MMC = 2.000 mm
→ Bonus = 0.004 mm
→ Total Allowed = 0.018 mm
Formula (GD&T Position Calculation)
1. Feature Sizes
- MMC (Maximum Material Condition)
- Internal feature (hole): MMC = Smallest size
- External feature (shaft): MMC = Largest size
- LMC (Least Material Condition)
- Opposite of MMC
2. Position Error
Position Error = √(X² + Y²)
3. Bonus Tolerance (MMC Modifier)
- Internal Feature (Hole):
Bonus = Measured Size − MMC - External Feature (Shaft):
Bonus = MMC − Measured Size
4. Total Position Tolerance
Total Allowed = Listed Tolerance + Bonus
5. Pass / Fail Logic
- If Position Error ≤ Total Allowed → ✅ PASS
- If Position Error > Total Allowed → ❌ FAIL
How to Use This Calculator
Step 1: Input Drawing Information
- Select feature type (internal / external)
- Enter nominal size (mm)
- Input:
- Upper tolerance (+)
- Lower tolerance (−)
- Select modifier (MMC, LMC, RFS)
- Enter listed position tolerance (mm)
Step 2: Input Measured Values
- Enter X deviation (mm)
- Enter Y deviation (mm)
- Enter measured size (mm)
Step 3: Get Results
✔ Position tolerance
✔ Bonus tolerance
✔ Total allowed tolerance
✔ Position error
✔ Pass / Fail result
Example Calculation
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Nominal Size | 2.000 mm |
| Tolerance | +0.005 / -0.005 |
| MMC (hole) | 1.995 mm |
| Measured Size | 2.004 mm |
| Listed Tolerance | 0.014 mm |
| X / Y | 0.009 / 0.005 |
👉 Results:
- Position Error = √(0.009² + 0.005²) ≈ 0.0103 mm
- Bonus = 2.004 − 1.995 = 0.009 mm
- Total Allowed = 0.014 + 0.009 = 0.023 mm
- ✔ PASS
Common Engineering Uses
1. GD&T Inspection
- Verify part compliance with drawing requirements
2. CNC Machining Quality Control
- Ensure positional accuracy of holes and features
3. Assembly Fit Verification
- Confirm proper alignment between components
4. Metrology & CMM Analysis
- Evaluate measurement data
GD&T Modifier Explanation
| Modifier | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MMC | Maximum material condition (adds bonus tolerance) |
| LMC | Least material condition |
| RFS | Regardless of feature size (no bonus) |
Important Notes
- Bonus tolerance only applies when MMC or LMC is used
- RFS → No bonus tolerance
- Accuracy depends on:
- Measurement method
- CMM precision
- Datum reference setup
⚠️ Always verify critical features with calibrated equipment.

FAQ
What is position tolerance?
It defines how far a feature can deviate from its true position.
What is bonus tolerance?
Extra tolerance gained when feature size departs from MMC.
What is MMC?
The condition where the feature contains the maximum material.
What is position error?
The actual deviation from true position, calculated using X/Y offsets.
What standard does this follow?
Typically ASME Y14.5 GD&T standard.
