What Is EDM Machining?

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-contact, thermo-electric process where a series of electrical sparks remove material from a workpiece.

Key features include:

  • Ability to machine hard metals and hardened tool steels

  • High-precision cutting with tolerances as tight as ±0.01 mm

  • Production of complex shapes, sharp corners, and intricate cavities

  • Minimal mechanical stress on the part, avoiding deformation

EDM is widely used in tool and die making, mold manufacturing, and precision components where conventional machining cannot achieve the desired accuracy or geometry.

Advantages of CMS EDM Machining Service

Wire EDM vs Die-Sinking EDM

wire EDM machining process 800x600

Wire EDM:

  • Uses a thin, continuously moving wire as an electrode

  • Ideal for cutting intricate profiles, sharp internal corners, and thin sections

  • Suitable for 2D or 2.5D shapes

  • Excellent for small, precision components and prototypes

Die-Sinking EDM:

  • Uses shaped electrodes to create cavities and molds in 3D

  • Best for deep pockets, complex 3D shapes, and tool/mold fabrication

  • Suitable for medium-to-large batch production

  • Allows high-precision replication of electrode shape in the workpiece

Choosing the Right Method:

  • Use Wire EDM for intricate outlines, fine cuts, or when minimal material is removed

  • Use Die-Sinking EDM for molds, cavities, and parts requiring 3D depth and volume

By combining these two EDM methods, CMS can handle any precision machining challenge, ensuring optimal quality and efficiency for your parts.

Applications Across Industries

  • Automotive: Dies, molds, and precision components

  • Aerospace: Engine parts, turbine components, and structural elements

  • Medical Devices: Surgical tools, implants, and precision housings

  • Industrial Equipment: Molds, jigs, and precision tooling

  • Electronics: Connectors, heat sinks, and components requiring fine detail

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is mainly used to produce complex shapes, fine details, and precision components made from hard metals that are difficult to machine using traditional cutting tools. It’s ideal for mold making, aerospace parts, medical instruments, and precision tooling.

EDM works well on conductive materials, including hardened steels, tungsten carbide, titanium, copper, aluminum, Inconel, and stainless steel. It is especially useful for parts that have already undergone heat treatment.

Unlike conventional CNC milling or turning, EDM can machine hard materials, tight corners, and deep cavities without mechanical stress or tool wear. It delivers excellent accuracy, smooth finishes, and intricate shapes that other methods cannot achieve.

CMS’s EDM machining can reach dimensional tolerances of ±0.002 mm or better, depending on part geometry and material. This makes it ideal for applications requiring extreme precision and repeatability.

    • Wire EDM uses a thin wire as an electrode to cut through material and is ideal for profiles and through-slots.

    • Sinker EDM (Die-Sinking EDM) uses a shaped electrode to create cavities or intricate 3D forms in the workpiece.
CMS provides both types to suit different manufacturing needs.

EDM affects only a very thin layer (microns) of the surface known as the recast layer. CMS uses optimized parameters and post-process treatments to minimize heat-affected zones and ensure excellent part integrity.

EDM is widely used in automotive, aerospace, medical, electronics, robotics, and mold manufacturing industries, where precision and surface quality are critical.
